How does Rock Steady Boxing Help Parkinson’s?

Rock Steady Boxing changes the trajectory of Parkinson’s disease. Our evidence-based exercise curriculum is specifically designed to impact the symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. We are more than just an exercise program, we are a worldwide community fighting back together.

How did Rock Steady Boxing Start?

Rock Steady Boxing was founded in 2006 by Scott C. Newman after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at the age of 40. Determined to fight back, Scott, started to train with his friend and former Golden Gloves boxer Vince Perez. He found this training was helping his symptoms to the point where his tremor was controlled and he felt Rock Steady. Soon his Young Onset PD group joined in the fight and this labor of love quickly gained national attention.

Today, Rock Steady Boxing is a thriving international nonprofit organization. What began as a personal journey for Scott Newman has evolved into a international network of health professionals and fitness professionals offering Rock Steady Boxing programs in over 800 Affiliate locations in every state and 14 countries worldwide.

Rob Putnam is our head coach and owner of Rocksteady Santa Clara and Oakridge. He has been working with Rocksteady for ten years and has a deep sense of care and compassion for helping the Parkinson’s community. He also has been an avid martial artist and trainer for over 25 years.

Ibrahim Bharoocha has been coaching and training in different martial arts since age 11. He has a strong joy for helping people fight Parkinson’s through the art of boxing. He is also currently pursuing his degree in Kinesiology at San Jose State.

Anthony Palomo has been coaching and training in boxing for over 25 years and has a vast knowledge of the “sweet science.” He has been working with people with Parkinson’s for over 5 years and always finds ways to relate the art of boxing to every day life.

OUR STAFF

Here’s what some of our Rock Steady Boxers have to say!

I have been participating in Rock Steady Boxing for about a year and believe that Rob and the RSB community have transformed my outlook for Parkinsons. The exercises, stretching, boxing techniques and colleagues at RSB have both physically and emotionally strengthened me in the Parkinsons journey. Rob’s knowledge of and recommendations for living with Parkinson's are invaluable.   My family is not alone in this battle with PD.

-Joe P

Rock Steady boxing for Parky's is a truly wonderful thing!  My husband has been going for about 2 years and the program has kept him moving and educated in how to take care of himself.  Robby is a very motivating coach and really cares about his guys and gals.  Absolute 10 out of 10!

-Nina W

I been participating in RSB for about three years now. It's the best thing I have done for my PD. My neurologist keeps saying "what ever your doing, Keep doing it" My numbers keep improving every time. Rob keeps motivating us. He cares about his students. He asks us how are we doing outside of class, and is a great inspiration.

Rock Steady Santa Clara, led by Rob Putman, is a great resource for people with Parkinson’s Disease (PD).  Rob and his coaches are great.  They use their knowledge of boxing and exercise to help us manage PD symptoms and improve our quality of life.  They’re welcoming and compassionate, creating a community of support among the participants.  Good leadership, good workouts, camaraderie, and it’s fun.  Highly recommended!
